Chaos-

It’s interesting what one might find outside on a shopping mall wall. I was walking toward an entrance when I saw this very nice, chaotic iron sculptor on the side of the building. I love the wild pattern and the soft shadows underneath, which helps in giving it; it’s shape and depth.

Wine Bottle-

My new project for the week was to shoot tethered (camera to computer) so I could see what I was shooting better. (I’d rather be looking at a large image on my computer than a small LCD image on the back of my camera.) This way I could see how much detail was in my shadow area and also see if my high lights were going to be blown out. I decided to photograph this wine bottle in my office, using window light as my light source. I only needed to take four shoots before I knew I had the picture I wanted. First, I had to turn the bottle a little to the left. Second, I put a white piece of cardboard (as a reflector) on the right side to open up the shadows. Then I changed my aperture to f/5.6 from f/8. I wanted to separate the bottle from the background by putting the background slightly out of focus. Shooting tether was fun and the project completed!

Rain, Rain, Go Away-

It rained all day yesterday, so I did a lot of reading and catching up on things. I did spend some of my time looking out the window at the rain coming down. I saw this abstract reflection coming from our table and chairs on the patio. One of the good things about rain is the nice reflections they leave behind.

Wm. S. Hart Museum-

I went to the Wm. S. Hart Museum and took the tour of the mansion. That was the good news but the bad news was NO flash inside. I had to crank up my ISO to 800, which was no problem. Enjoyed the tour and got a few pictures as well.

Fall Leaves-

With some morning dew on the fall leaves and some nice soft light coming from overhead, it makes for a wonderful picture. It was taken in my backyard this morning after some wind blew down a ton of leaves yesterday.

Early Morning Light-

This was taken on my way out to Bishop on my way home. The lighting was so nice and just soft enough, that it made the fields and mountains come alive.

Sunrise In The Eastern Sierras-

I saw this photo out of my Motel window just before I was going to breakfast. I grabbed my camera and ran across the highway to get this shot before the light changed. I think people thought I was a little nuts about trying to get this photo, but that’s what photographers do.

Autumn Leaves-

It’s always fun to go up into the Sierra Mountains and see the beautiful colors of Fall. This year it was a little harder because we had to go up to around the 7,000 foot level to find color. This is the fun of photography.

Moonlight-

Photographing at night during a full moon is something I haven’t done in a very long time. A little over a week ago I went into the Alabama Hills in Lone Pine, Ca. to photograph the Sierra Mountains using the full moon as my light source. It turned out to be so much fun to do, that I’m planning on going back and doing it again.

Hollywood Night in Newhall-

Last week in Newhall they had Hollywood night on Main Street. It sure was a lot of fun. They had music, dancing, and impersonators like Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin. It made for some interesting photos.

Union station-

I was waiting for my train when I saw this young man sitting alone and deep in thought. I decided to take a picture or two just before a small group of people came and the whole scene changed. I was glad I was quick enough to get my picture.

Union Station-

There are so many beautiful things at Union Station and one of them is their tile that is on some of their walls and archways. It’s hard to believe that the tile has stayed in this great of shape after all these years.

Union Station

It was a great idea riding the Metro Link and going down to Union Station to take some photos. Once down there I took my time walking around the station, both inside and outside. The light was getting hard, but I still got some interesting photos.

Blue And White Design-

I really liked the lighting on this overhang. The more I looked, the more interesting the design became with the shadows adding shape and depth. The white wood had some detail to it and the beautiful clean blue sky just set it off just right for me.

Japanese Garden- Walking Around

It’s always fun to get out for a few hours and photograph. Last weekend I went to The Japanese Garden at the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant in Van Nuys, for some wonderful photos. The day started off overcast, which made for some very nice light. After about 45 minutes it began to drizzle for a short time, but made everything look richer in color. All I know is that I loved the light and got some nice pictures.

Manhattan Beach Bike Races-

It’s always fun to watch the bike racers come down the street and whiz by you as you are trying to take their pictures. This year I was looking for things that didn’t move that fast.

This young tricycle racer was more my speed.

I saw this racer at the starting line when I noticed this great reflection in his glasses.

These red bike frames made a nice pattern.

Around Town-

I spent about an hour walking around the town of Old Newhall, looking for some interesting images. It was fun walking slowly and taking my time to see what’s around me. Here are a few of the images that I took.

Laws Railroad Museum-

I like this handbill that shows $5000 reward for “The Wild Bunch,” aka “The Hole In The Wall Gang!” It’s funny that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid don’t look anything like Paul Newman or Robert Redford!

I decided to finish off the image in B&W using NIK Silver Efex Pro, to give it that old western look!

I always enjoy stopping in at Laws Railroad Museum to see what’s new and find something different that I haven’t photographed before. This time it was a baggage handcart, which made for a nice picture.

Eastern Sierra Mountains-

My friend Joe and I went up into the Sierra Mountains around the Bishop area for a few days to get some new photos of “snow on the mountain tops!” We had some interesting weather-- from being overcast, to beautiful clouds, to bright blue sunny skies. The temperature was any where from the low 40’s, to the high 70’s; we had it all.

Cowboy Festival-

Once again it was fun going to the Cowboy Festival in Santa Clarita and seeing all the different people dressed up in their western gear. Here’s a young cowgirl who seems to have gotten bored with it all and would like to go home. Made for an interesting moment.
